Noi sottoscritti siamo inequivocabilmente solidali con i palestinesi mentre resistono alla colonizzazione.

La nostra industria professa di nutrire e arricchire l’esperienza dell’infanzia. Come possiamo tacere se i bambini vengono presi di mira, uccisi, resi orfani, incarcerati, espropriati e traumatizzati da uno Stato occupante?
Abbiamo visto Israele massacrare intere famiglie a Gaza – distruggendo deliberatamente infrastrutture sanitarie, sociali e culturali essenziali. Abbiamo visto organizzazioni di coloni israeliani minacciare le case delle famiglie palestinesi a Gerusalemme est occupata. Abbiamo assistito al brutale assalto di fedeli pacifici alla moschea di Al-Aqsa. Abbiamo visto israeliani linciare i palestinesi con la protezione e la partecipazione della polizia israeliana. Abbiamo assistito agli arresti di massa e alle uccisioni di coloro che hanno partecipato alle proteste contro la propria pulizia etnica.
Guardiamo con dolore e orrore.
Riconosciamo questi eventi come episodi ricorrenti nella violenta colonizzazione della Palestina, iniziata nel 1948 e in corso da 73 anni. Riconosciamo Israele come uno Stato di apartheid imposto su una terra palestinese rubata. Riconosciamo la sovranità e l’umanità dei palestinesi nella loro lotta contro l’oppressione.
Notiamo l’entusiasmo con cui l’industria della letteratura infantile si è mobilitata sulla scia delle proteste di Black Lives Matter del 2020, rilasciando dichiarazioni di solidarietà e creando nuove collane e pubblicazioni per la giustizia.
Al contrario, notiamo che l’industria ha in gran parte mantenuto il suo silenzio sulla pulizia etnica della Palestina.
Comprendiamo che la testimonianza e la denominazione svolgono un ruolo importante nel processo di cambiamento. Quello a cui stiamo assistendo si chiama genocidio. Con questa lettera, speriamo di normalizzare questa conversazione all’interno dell’industria editoriale, della più ampia comunità artistica e oltre; avvicinandoci sempre più a un punto di svolta, e alla liberazione palestinese.
